What a Broadfork Does (That a Tiller Can't)

We just added a new tool to the farm: a broadfork.

If you've never seen one, it looks intimidating—like a giant garden fork with two long handles. But it does something important that regular tilling can't: it loosens soil without destroying its structure.

Let me explain why that matters.

What a Broadfork Is

A broadfork (sometimes called a U-bar digger) is a manual soil-loosening tool with:

  • A horizontal bar with 5-7 steel tines (usually 10-12 inches long)
  • Two vertical handles on each end
  • No moving parts, no engine, no complexity

You drive the tines straight down into the soil using your body weight and a foot bar, then pull back on the handles to lift and fracture the soil beneath the surface. Then you step back about 6 inches and repeat down the entire bed.

It's simple. It's manual. And it's incredibly effective.

What It Actually Does

Here's the key difference between a broadfork and traditional tilling:

Tilling (with a rototiller or plow):

  • Turns the soil over completely
  • Mixes all the layers together
  • Destroys soil structure
  • Kills beneficial fungal networks
  • Brings dormant weed seeds to the surface
  • Creates a "plow pan" of compaction below the tilled layer

Broadforking:

  • Loosens soil vertically without turning it over
  • Preserves soil layers and structure
  • Keeps beneficial organisms intact
  • Doesn't bring up new weed seeds
  • Breaks up compaction without creating new problems
  • Aerates deeply (10-12 inches down)

The result? You get all the benefits of loosening compacted soil without destroying the soil ecosystem you've been building.

Why This Matters for Our Farm

We practice minimal tillage as part of our regenerative approach. We're not trying to flip and destroy the soil every season—we're trying to build it.

Healthy soil has structure. It has layers. It has fungal networks that connect plant roots and help them access nutrients. It has beneficial organisms living at different depths.

When you till, you destroy all of that. You're essentially resetting the soil ecosystem to zero every season and forcing yourself to rebuild from scratch.

When you broadfork, you preserve it. You're working with the soil's natural structure, not against it.

We use the broadfork to:

  • Relieve compaction from foot traffic during harvest
  • Loosen beds that got packed down from heavy rain
  • Prepare beds for planting without mixing layers
  • Aerate deeply before transplanting or direct-seeding

It lets us manage our beds effectively while keeping the soil biology intact.

How to Use a Broadfork

The technique is straightforward:

1. Wait for the right soil moisture
This is critical. Don't broadfork when soil is too wet (it'll compact instead of fracturing) or too dry (the tines won't penetrate easily). Use the squeeze test from last week's post—soil should be moist but crumbly.

2. Position the broadfork at the edge of the bed
Tines should be perpendicular to the bed, handles facing you.

3. Drive the tines straight down
Step on the foot bar and use your body weight. You want the tines fully inserted (or as deep as they'll go).

4. Pull back on the handles
Lean back and lift. You're not trying to flip anything over—you're just fracturing and lifting the soil a few inches to create air spaces.

5. Step back 6-8 inches and repeat
Work your way down the entire bed in a systematic pattern.

6. That's it
No raking, no smoothing, no extra work. The bed is now loosened and aerated without destroying its structure.

It's a workout—especially in heavier soil—but it's way less work than tilling and re-forming beds every season.

The Connection to Soil Health

Remember Friday's post about air spaces in soil? Those spaces are critical for:

  • Root growth
  • Oxygen exchange
  • Water infiltration and drainage
  • Soil organism activity

Tilling creates temporary air spaces but destroys long-term structure. You get a fluffy seedbed for a few weeks, then it compacts back down worse than before.

Broadforking preserves existing structure while creating new air spaces. The soil's natural aggregates stay intact, fungal networks stay connected, and you're just relieving pressure points.

Over time, this approach builds soil instead of degrading it. Each season, our beds get better—not because we're constantly tilling in amendments, but because we're protecting and enhancing what's already there.

Why Manual Tools Matter

Yes, a broadfork requires physical effort. You could run a tiller over a bed in 5 minutes instead of spending 15-20 minutes broadforking.

But here's the thing: the easy way often creates more work later.

Tilling gives you short-term ease and long-term problems:

  • Degraded soil structure
  • Increased weed pressure
  • More compaction below the surface
  • Damaged soil biology
  • The need to till again next season to fix what tilling broke

Broadforking requires more upfront effort but creates long-term benefits:

  • Preserved soil structure
  • Protected soil biology
  • Less weed pressure
  • Improved drainage and root penetration
  • Soil that gets better each season

We're not farming for one season. We're farming for 20+ years. The broadfork is an investment in doing this right.
