ORGANIC VS REGENERATIVE: WHY WE FARM DIFFERENTLY

We're not certified organic. And honestly? We're doing something better.

I'm often asked about this. People see that we don't use synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or fertilizers, and they naturally ask: "Are you organic?"

Not exactly. We're more than organic. Let me explain the difference—and why it matters for the food you're eating.

What "Organic" Actually Means

Organic certification is a set of rules about what you can't use on your farm:

  • No synthetic pesticides
  • No synthetic fertilizers
  • No GMOs
  • No sewage sludge

These are important standards. They protect you from chemicals and synthetic inputs that shouldn't be in your food.

But here's what organic certification doesn't address:

  • Whether you're building soil or depleting it
  • Whether you till (which destroys soil structure and beneficial organisms)
  • Whether you're increasing biodiversity or creating monocultures
  • Whether your farm is actually sustainable long-term

You can follow every single organic rule and still mine your soil, destroy the fungal networks that feed plants, and leave the land worse than you found it.

Organic tells you what a farmer isn't doing. It doesn't tell you what they are building.

This Is Where Regenerative Farming Is Different

Regenerative agriculture isn't about a list of prohibited inputs. It's about actively improving the land, the soil, and the ecosystem with every season you farm.

The question isn't "Did you avoid bad chemicals?" The question is "Is your soil healthier this year than it was last year?"

Here's what that looks like at JPL Homestead:

Permanent Raised Beds with Minimal Tillage
We don't plow or till our beds every season. Tillage destroys soil structure and kills about 90% of the beneficial fungal networks that help plants access nutrients. Our permanent beds stay minimally disturbed, which means the soil ecosystem remains intact and thriving.

Constant Compost Applications
We're not just feeding plants—we're feeding the soil. Compost builds organic matter, feeds beneficial microbes, improves water retention, and creates the living ecosystem that grows nutrient-dense food. Healthy soil feeds plants better than any fertilizer ever could.

Strict Crop Rotation
We never plant the same crop family in the same bed two seasons in a row. This breaks pest cycles naturally, prevents nutrient depletion, and builds soil health over time. It's more work to plan and track, but it's how you farm sustainably without chemicals.

Cover Cropping (In Progress)
We're working toward incorporating cover crops between cash crop seasons. Cover crops protect the soil, add organic matter, fix nitrogen, prevent erosion, and feed soil life even when we're not growing vegetables. This is the next level of regenerative practice we're building toward.

Why This Matters for Your Family

Here's the bottom line: vegetables grown in truly healthy, living soil are more nutrient-dense and more flavorful than vegetables grown in depleted soil—even organic depleted soil.

When plants have access to a full spectrum of nutrients from thriving soil ecosystems, they don't just grow bigger. They grow better.

They develop more complex flavors. They contain higher levels of vitamins, minerals, and beneficial compounds. They're more resilient to pests and disease.

You can taste the difference. Our tomatoes don't taste like grocery store tomatoes—even organic grocery store tomatoes. They taste the way tomatoes are supposed to taste because they're grown in soil that's alive and thriving.

And your body can tell the difference, too.

The Long Game

Regenerative farming is harder than conventional farming. It requires more planning, more knowledge, more observation, more care.

But it's the only way to farm that actually improves the land over time instead of degrading it.

When Jennifer and I started JPL Homestead, we weren't just thinking about this season or next season. We were thinking about what we're leaving for our kids—and for the community that depends on this land for food.

Every season, our soil gets richer. More organic matter. More beneficial organisms. Better structure. Healthier plants.
